opera chorus all in black
black masks, long plumes
draping shoulders
soprano singing dido’s lament
a large flock of crows caws above us
moving into the sunset
in perfect choreographed flight
which no human or humans
could design or sound
and even though the soprano’s voice
is beautiful and moving
and makes me weep
i prefer to listen to the crows
Note: “Dido’s Lament” is the popular name for the famous aria “When I am laid in earth” from the opera Dido and Aenas by Henry Purcell.
